Baytown, Texas - In
light of the recent hurricanes, Awards & Engraving, a manufacturer of trophies in Baytown, Texas, has
released a checklist of necessary items to have and actions to take before and
during a hurricane.
If you live in an area that is ordered to evacuate, the best
thing you can do is to have a plan in place ahead of time. If you are traveling
to a different area, be sure to have your directions printed in case there is
loss of power or cell service. If you are planning to take cover in a shelter,
you should know where your shelter is and how to get there before you see a
single drop of rain.
Fill Cans with Gasoline
Hurricanes can be life threatening. So, you’ll want to be
sure that your car has a full tank and that you have reserve canisters of
gasoline filled in case you need to run from the storm. Also, many gas stations
may be sold out of gas or have excruciatingly long lines. It would be best to
stock up on your gasoline as early as possible to avoid running into either of
these issues.
Stockpile Food and Water
Severe storms have the potential to cut off access to food
and water supplies. It is essential that you have enough food and water for you
and your family for at least a few days. The Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) suggests that you have a supply of nonperishable food and water
that will last even longer.
“Even though it is unlikely that an emergency would cut off
your food supply for two weeks, consider maintaining a supply that will last
that long,” says FEMA.
Take it Seriously
If government officials and/or agencies tell you to evacuate
your home, Awards & Engraving, a company that creates banners in Baytown, Texas, strongly suggests you do so. It
is much better to be safe than sorry. Hurricanes can cause massive damage and
loss of life. While evacuating is inconvenient, it is worth securing the safety
of yourself and your family.
Hurricane’s can also decrease into less powerful storms
called tropical storms. While these storms are less severe, they are still
serious.
“While hurricanes pose the greatest threat to life and
property, tropical storms and depression also can be devastating. The primary
hazards from tropical cyclones (which include tropical depressions, tropical
storms, and hurricanes) are storm surge flooding, inland flooding from heavy
rains, destructive winds, tornadoes, and high surf and rip currents,” according
to the National Weather Service.
In summation, if a hurricane is coming toward your town,
listen to public officials, be prepared, and above all else, stay safe.
